It’s Not Rocket Science (And That’s the Good News)

I know. I’ve known for years.
I’ve been stacking healthy habits for a good long while now: daily movement, mornings that belong to me, and a handful of promises I keep no matter what. You’d think by now I’d have this whole getting-out-of-my-own-way thing completely handled. And then life hands me a fresh, friendly reminder that I’m still a work in progress.
Here’s the latest. One of my daily movement accountability groups kicked off a healthy-eating challenge, and I decided I was in. A couple of days later, I could already feel the difference. Some water weight, gone. Sleeping hard: the deep, dead-to-the-world kind.
Waking up feeling great.
Which was wonderful. And also a little funny, because none of it was a surprise. I knew exactly what would happen when I cleaned up my plate. I’ve always known.
We already have the information
You know you should move more. You know you should get more sleep, spend less time on your phone, and eat better food. You have the information. You’ve probably had it for years.
Most of us aren’t missing a fact. We’re missing a decision.
That’s the part I keep coming back to. The results we want aren’t locked in a vault somewhere. They’re right there, waiting on three ordinary things: making the decision, being consistent, and keeping the promise you make to yourself.
It’s not rocket science. None of it is new. And that’s the best news I could give you, because it means you don’t need a breakthrough or a perfect moment. You just need to start. Any ordinary day will do, and today works just fine.
My confession
The big habits are locked in. I move every day, and my mornings are mine. Where I slip is the little stuff. A bit of junk food or something sweet sneaks into my afternoon. Pizza one night, cheeseburgers a couple of nights later, and suddenly I’ve had two or three not-so-healthy dinners that week without ever really deciding to. None of it feels like a big deal in the moment. But it adds up, and at my age, it adds up faster than it used to.
I have a few foods that are my kryptonite. I won’t name them, because you’ve got your own list and you know exactly what’s on it. I don’t count or track or follow a rigid plan. I eat real food most of the time. When I stay in my lane, everything hums along. When I veer off for a stretch, I feel it fast.
So when the challenge came along, I didn’t need a new plan. I needed to stop debating the old one.
Decide once
Getting in our own way rarely looks dramatic. It sounds like “just this once,” or “I’ll start Monday,” or “I’ve had a long day, I’ve earned it.” That’s the same voice I learned to stop negotiating with about my workouts. It turns out it has opinions about dessert, too.
What works for me is deciding once. “I’ll try to eat better this week” leaves the door open at every single meal. Deciding what’s in and what’s out, today, and then not reopening the conversation, closes it. My group makes the whole thing more fun. The decision is what does the work.
And here’s my favorite part: every promise I keep makes me hungry for the next one (the good kind of hungry). Nailing one habit didn’t make me feel finished. It made me curious about what else I could build.
Your turn
Whatever is in your way, whether that’s sugar, the late-night scroll, or something only you can name, you probably already know what it is. And you probably already know what to do about it.
So pick one thing you want to do every day, and start today. You have a goal? Work on it daily. Make it non-negotiable. That’s the heart of the Non-Negotiable 20™: a small daily promise you keep, no renegotiating. For me it started with twenty minutes of movement.
It has a lovely way of spreading into everything else.
